3 Tips To Instantly Become A Successful Recruiter

📅 November 24, 2017

Recruiters must begin not by focussing on the activities but by defining the deliverables of the work. They must be able to articulate the role the way the hiring manager demands and must set out their objectives in a way that results in a successful search result. To achieve success, recruiters must realize how they have been doing their job all along.

They have been spending more time searching than researching. Also, recruiters are obsessed with the myths that surround their profession. Regardless of the myths, it is now time to talk less and do more. It is time to perform.

Here are 3 simple tips that will instantly help create value in your work

Know about the Company: How much do you know about the company that you are hiring for? Test yourself. Ask someone to question you on your knowledge about the company’s history, services, locations, headcount and jobs.

Recently while interviewing a recruiter, we questioned them on the same lines. Though the client was a multinational healthcare services company, with much hesitation, they described the company as a medical shop chain! When a candidate asks what a company does, they are not asking for Google answers. Candidates ask a recruiter because you would be in a position to leverage extensive information relevant to the role that the candidate seems fit for.

Know about the People: View profiles of employees currently working in the organization that you are hiring for. How long have they been there? What type of companies did they work prior to joining here? What are the average salaries? How long did they work for before exiting each job? Use job boards and LinkedIn to conduct your research. If possible, speak to a couple of employees to seek opinions on the work culture. Ask them, ‘what advice would they give someone who wishes to apply to your company?’.

In addition, read reviews about the company written by current and former employees. Glassdoor is one such site.

Know about the Job: Read the job description thoroughly. Speak to the hiring recruiter and ask them to explain the job description. Request them to set up a call with the hiring manager. Many a time, hiring managers give qualitative insights which may not be captured in a job description. This includes traits expected of the candidate, projects they are working for, is it a new role or a replacement role etc. Begin by asking the right questions to hiring managers and explore further to unlock answers which can be shared with suitable candidates.

Regardless of fluctuations in hiring patterns, demand for the best talent will always be ahead of the supply. Do your groundwork before you jump into the search. Understand how candidates make career decisions. Understand what kind of a candidate the hiring manager is looking for. This is not easy to pull off because the best candidates will always have multiple job opportunities. No wonder most recruiters struggle to close any given position.

As a recruiter, the only way to be successful is to create a proactive effort. Read the above three points again and again. Add points which you feel are vital to your success. Create your own checklist and become a successful recruiter.
