Employee Engagement – Are Your Employees Dedicated To Their Work?

📅 November 24, 2017

Urmila, who works as a hiring manager with a tier 2 firm and Han Digital’s top client was upset about her disengaged employees. The attrition rate was high and almost every employee they hired left in a month or two. The situation was drastic and required immediate professional help.

Urmila approached Han Digital for assistance and after evaluating the pros and cons, conducting internal surveys and connecting with ex-employees, the results that emerged were quite shocking. As per the results, Han Digital experts realised that the employees were undervalued for the work they performed. A quarter of the staff were not engaged and the rest were disengaged – meaning they were least interested to contribute anything towards the company.

Employee disengagement is a serious concern to almost all business firms these days. According to a Gallup study – 32% of employed Indians are actively disengaged, and 60% are not engaged. According to another study, Indians had a 46% engagement rate which was way ahead of the US (30%). As per Steve Crabtree’s observation, “Nearly one-third of the country’s (India) are actively disengaged. Crabtree is a Senior Editor and Research Analyst at Gallup.

These statistics are appalling and provides a sad picture about the modern workplace. Urmila was seeking advices to which we suggested that she inculcate a culture of appreciation within her organisation: Here are a few tips that helped Urmila put an end to employee disengagement.

Be aware of appreciation

Every individual is different and so are their attitudes. Change in behaviour for personal matters is nearly impossible. But successful management relies on change and to emerge as a best player among your employees it is a must that you introduce a change in your attitude.

If you are not in the habit of appreciating your employees, begin by observing behaviours that add value to your company. It could be anything – their contribution to a project, ideas, hard work, dedication and motivation to work. Observing can help you assimilate trends, evaluate attitudes and implement strategies that will benefit both the management and workforce.

Show interest

Empathising with your employees is a great way to know them, their attitude towards work and interest levels. Connecting with your employees by listening to their problems, past, present and future ambitions will help you understand them on a different level. Moreover, your organisation will also get a reputation of being the most employee-friendly in the industry.

Determine their roles

Ensure that you clarify roles of your employees. Take time to go through each job profile and determine their responsibilities in the current profile. Also provide a detailed understanding about future prospects and promotions. By doing this an employee gets a sense of being and clear understanding of company objectives.

Trust your employees

Do not pester employees for trivial matters. Give them a chance to handle projects or assignments alone. It is empowering and gives them sense of pride to take personal ownership of outcomes.

Foster their skills

Provide training sessions and opportunities for employees to hone their existing skills and become competent players in the market. Encourage succession planning and internal mobility which will push in additional responsibilities and offer them a sense of personal ownership. Introduce new methods and techniques which will help your employees grow in their respective professions.
